Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in the US, is an actress and rapper. Her career as a musician actor, filmmaker and TV performer has garnered the actress the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won a Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot as well as Rita Owens, both members of the police force. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who taught the class at Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of 10. Latifah was born and brought up within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah refers to an Arabic word that means "delicate and compassionate". Her cousin granted it to her when she was eight. Latifah is a very tall, 5'10" girl who was on the high school basketball squad. She performed the hit song home from The Wiz at a school play. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her journey into beatboxing. Latifah is among the first members of Flavor Unit, which was at that time a collective of MCs around DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The song was sent to the host of Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music who was working for Latifah during that time and was awed by the single. The song was released in 1988. Wrath of My Madness as the first single by Latifah.
